Do You Always Have Plan B?

Date Posted: Feb 1, 2020

Whenever the phrase 'Plan B' comes to my mind, it reminds me when Demi Moore blurted out "Plan B" in the climax of the film Charles' Angels. Being the villain, her 'Plan B' failed.

Meanwhile, I also remember this old TV show series called Project Runway, a reality fashion-design competition that I used to follow. A candidate named Dmitry Sholokhov,  who consistently swept the top slot in every elimination round of the show, won the prestigious first prize. He made a remarkable phrase in his interview after winning when he said:  "I never do Plan B." He owned it!

There is also a quote that reverberates in the sci-fi film "Gattaca" where the main character, Vincent, who was too determined to get into the next space flight to a distant star, did the impossible methods to reach his ultimate aim. And in the ending tail of his cold sibling rivalry with his brother Anton, they swam together at the wavy sea to prove who is better. Anton, who was the ace, drowned, while the weaker Vincent saved him. It was unexpected! Anton asked him how he made the impossible entry to Gattaca. He said: "This is how I did it, Anton. I never saved anything for the swim back." -- I'm floored! It's one of my favorite quotes to date.

Two out of my three samples above are fictitious. The second from Dmitry was the only one with real visual citation. We know that there may be similar instances to this in life.

I can conclude that urgency can fuel an outright move to finish the task. Delaying an action, like moving a deadline, can only lengthen and change decisions that will hinder progress. Then, it is either a hit or miss. Too many rationalizations go hand in hand in a process until the task gets accomplished.

There are absolute risk-takers, while there are those who chicken out. How about you? Do you always rely on having Plan B to get assured of shooting things out?

If you want more of this, watch Arnold Schwarzenegger's I Hate Plan B.
